Starting January 2023 to March 2023, the BCcampus Online Book Club –The Open Edition will be reading and discussing three Open works: two from the BCcampus Open Collection and one from Hybrid Pedagogy’s open access books as follows:
January: A Comprehensive Guide to Applying Universal Design for Learning: a collection of three UDL workbooks by Dr. Seanna Takacs and Junsong Zhang.
Universal Design for Learning: A Practical Guide by Dr. Seanna Takacs, Junsong Zhang, Helen Lee, Lynn Truong, and David Smulders was partially funded via the BCcampus Open Education Sustainability Grant Program.
During the month of January, we’ll explore the contents of each of the three guide books, and gain a deeper understanding of “Why UDL Matters?”, one of the first questions in this comprehensive and practical guide. As a book club member, each week you’ll receive a question or prompt, designed by the authors of the book, to guide your reading. You can respond to, answer or ask questions asynchronously, at a time that works within your schedule, in our online book club community in Mattermost. During the final week of the month, join us for a conversation with the authors. This session will be a synchronous 1-hour in Zoom. We will record the conversation for those who can’t join us live.
Week 1: A Practical Guide: The Framework, Myths, Planning & Case Studies
Week 2: UDL Strategies for Blended and Online Learning

February: Teaching in a Digital Age by Dr. Tony Bates
The February selection of the BCcampus Online Bookclub will be Teaching in the Digital Age by Tony Bates. Originally published in 2015, updated in 2019 and 2021.
The book examines the underlying principles that guide effective teaching in an age when all of us, and in particular, the students we are teaching, are using technology. A framework for making decisions about your teaching is provided, while understanding that every subject is different, and every instructor has something unique and special to bring to their teaching.
The book enables teachers and instructors to help students develop the knowledge and skills they will need in a digital age: not so much the IT skills, but the thinking and attitudes to learning that will bring them success.
